The Vibe Coding Security Crisis Nobody Is Talking About

AI coding tools are transforming how we build software. They're also creating a security disaster in slow motion.

In December 2025, security researchers at Escape.tech published a study that should have set off alarm bells across the developer community. They scanned 5,600 publicly deployed applications built with AI coding tools — Cursor, Bolt, Lovable, Replit Agent, and others.

What they found was staggering:

  • 400+ exposed secrets — API keys, database credentials, authentication tokens sitting in plain text
  • 2,000+ security vulnerabilities — SQL injection, XSS, broken authentication, the works
  • Only 10.5% of AI-generated code is actually secure — despite being functionally correct

The workflow that's creating the problem

Here's how most developers use AI coding tools today:

  1. Describe what you want to build
  2. AI generates the code
  3. AI asks for API keys to test the integration
  4. You paste your live keys into the chat
  5. Ship it

Step 4 is where everything goes wrong. When you paste an API key into Cursor, Claude Code, or any AI assistant, that key is:

  • Transmitted to external servers
  • Stored in conversation logs
  • Potentially processed by third-party models
  • Outside your control forever

And because AI tools are so good at making code that works, developers ship without thinking twice about whether the code is secure.

What you can do about it

The solution isn't to stop using AI coding tools. They're too powerful and too productive to abandon. The solution is to change your workflow:

1. Never paste live secrets into AI tools

This should be an absolute rule. No exceptions. If the AI asks for an API key, use a placeholder or test key instead.

2. Store secrets in a vault, fetch at runtime

Instead of putting secrets in environment variables (which you then paste everywhere), store them in a dedicated secrets manager. Your code fetches secrets when it needs them. The actual keys never appear in your source code, your git history, or your AI prompts.

3. Review AI-generated code for security

Before shipping, specifically look for:

  • Hardcoded credentials
  • SQL queries built from user input
  • Missing authentication checks
  • Exposed error messages

4. Use security scanning tools

Run automated security scans on your codebase. Tools like GitGuardian, Snyk, and Semgrep can catch many common vulnerabilities before they reach production.
